Abstract

The urgency of the topic is due to the rapid transformations in science and education at the end of the 20th century, which forced historians to study the historical and social consciousness, as well as the lack of substantiated, systematic research on the formation of historical consciousness of high school students in the context of competence-oriented education. The author considers historical consciousness as a category of historical science and an indicator of the effectiveness of school historical education; substantiates the relevance of forming the historical consciousness of high school students in the context of competenceoriented education, determines the specificity of the interaction of historical consciousness and subject historical competence. The article deals with the meaning of the concept of historical consciousness. In particular, it is noted that historical consciousness is one of the categories of historical science and characterizes the process of maturation and self-awareness of society of its essence, its «I». In the context of historical science and pedagogical practice it is a systemic and functional model for the formation of social values on the basis of knowledge, awareness and selfassessment of past events, which provides an opportunity for deeper learning of the system of knowledge about the nature of human society, studying and comparing the system of social values of society in different historical periods and epochs. The author considers historical consciousness of high school students as a special construct consisting of the following components: students' understanding of the historical context, their own experience of research, the complex of the most diverse sensory images of the past, ideas, feelings, experiences associated with the attitude of the individual to the historical content, the formation of identity and self-esteem. The article states that the formation of historical consciousness should become an integral part of the updated school historical education, modernization of Ukrainian society. Further developments require a conceptual apparatus, a structure of historical consciousness, and a system of tasks that will contribute to the effective formation of historical consciousness.
