Abstract

In the article, the authors consider didactic and methodical approaches to the organization of competence-oriented learning of foreign languages for elementary school students. Their views are based on the current trends in the development of school-based foreign education, taking into account the age-old features of pupils of 1–4 grades and their potential opportunities. The authors express their own point of view on the issues of competence approach to teaching foreign language communication, characterizing the essence of the concept of «competent personality of a student in the field of teaching a foreign language.» According to the results of the analysis of the content of modern school secondary education and the empirical research carried out, the educational activities that students must perform while mastering a foreign language communicative competence are determined and described. The system of exercises and tasks that can provide competently oriented teaching of foreign language communication among pupils of junior school age is determined and described. The theoretical and methodical approaches to their selection are described. The proposed exercises and tasks correspond to the objectives of the training outlined by the relevant curriculum; their types and forms of implementation are consistent with the psychophysiological characteristics of students and their potential capabilities; they are oriented on the current trends of the development of school foreign education; adapted to the main ideas of the Concept of the New Ukrainian School. The key theoretical and methodological points expressed by the authors are demonstrated by examples of the content of the English textbook designed for students of the 2nd form «ONCE UPON A BOOK».
