Abstract

The author of the article is Nazarenko Tetiana, a famous methodologist from the field of geography and Shylina Natalia, a teacher having significant experience, and a scientific degree. The article deals with the structural features of the contents of the modern textbook on geography, which form the geographical competence of high school pupils. On the basis of conducted psychological and pedagogical studies on the use of a textbook at the lessons of geography in school, the authors formulated the defining requirements for the content of a textbook on geography for the formation of pupils` geographical competence and presented consensus directions in the activities of teachers of geography. The task of the school in the light of formation of geographical competence is to promote the geographic approach to research activities in education, as well as the introduction of methods of geographic education in teaching at school. To do this, it is necessary to strengthen the value of geographic education through a variety of optional courses: Political Geography, Constructive Geography, GPS, Geography of Natural Resources, Geography of Languages, and Geography of Culture of the World, Geography of Medicine, Country Studies and other. As the competence approach in school-based geographic education should be accompanied by changes in approaches and mechanisms for the formation of content, we have taken into account the concept and standards of education. Therefore, as a consequence, the introduction of the competence approach in the geography requires a revision of the content of geographical education, which will allow to select and structure it, thereby achieving the desired result. Authors of the article emphasize that competence imposes high requirements for independent professional activity, which is based on deep subject knowledge, ability to take responsibility, ability to act constructively, rationally, flexibly, actively, creatively, unite individuality and find the best ways for realizing personal potential.
