Abstract

The focus of education on learning of a system of knowledge, which was traditional and justified a few decades ago, no longer corresponds to modern social order, which requires the education of independent, initiative, responsible members of society, able to interact effectively in solving social and production problems. Today, the level of education of students is already determined not by the amount of knowledge, but by their willingness to solve problems of varying complexity (based on knowledge, skills and abilities) using acquired competencies. Considering this and taking into account that school textbook remains the dominant source of subject knowledge at school, a combination of requirements for its modernization and the applied ethnographic orientation of the content is essential for the purpose of forming the civic competence of students. Consequently, in view of all the above, the modern educational system should be aimed at formation of highly educated, intellectually developed person with complete picture of the world, understanding the connections of phenomena and processes in surrounding reality, with stable civil position based on ethnographic, life-affirming knowledge, which, first of all, is presented in school textbooks and explained by teachers at geography lessons. The article deals with the role and place of modern geography textbook in educational process of general educational establishments aimed at educating of conscious citizens of Ukraine by means of local history. Several results of monitoring research on the specifics of implementation of competence approach in the process of teaching geography in general educational establishments of certain administrative and territorial areas of Sumy region are shown. The conditions of formation of civil competence by means of textbook are analyzed.
