Abstract

The article covers the functionality of tasks in modern biology textbooks, not only as a means of content self-mastering, but also as a way to form the pupils’ subject (biological) competence. For example, the textbook “Biology. Grade 6” (2014) and “Biology. Grade 7” (2015) proposed different tasks according to their functions: information, transformational, motivational, actualization, self-educational, practice-oriented and self-control ones. The placement of assignments at the beginning of a section and a chapter, in the paragraph, at the end of a section and a chapter was grounded, and examples of different types of tasks were provided. In the process of designing competence-oriented tasks and their inclusion in the biology textbooks, the results of the international monitoring research TIMMS and PISA must be taken into consideration.
