Abstract
This article considers the elective courses to be the part of profile education at high school. Elective courses content expand students’ knowledge, integrate scientific knowledge with common one and raise their personal experience on scientific level. This means strengthening of the personal orientation of teaching at school. The main tasks of the elective course textbook “Culture and Art of Great Britain” are to familiarize high school students with culture and art of Great Britain, enabling them to learn more about the national heritage of the country by expanding the scope of the information field and authentic use of English in the overall educational environment; to achieve educational goals thanks to the introduction to the history and culture of the country and gaining new information on the people living abroad; to deepen knowledge and improve students’ sociocultural competence in teaching foreign language. The author describes the technology on determining the content of structural components (in particular, thematic modules and themes) in the elective course textbook in English “Culture and Art of Great Britain” for students of profile schools. The dominant role of the textbook, as the primary means of mastering elective course content by high school, is determined. Creation of the Englishlanguage textbookmentioned above should broaden and deepen the knowledge of 10–11 grades students about the culture of the country whose language is being studied. The content of this textbook is based on the students experience gained during their studying foreign language in elementary and primary school. Special attention is paid to the analysis on survey results of high school students and teachers of English language of educational establishments in Ukraine on the semantic content of the textbook as the basis for determining the content of its structural components.
