Abstract

Solving stoichiometric problems in Chemistry belongs to the activity component of chemical competence. The ability to solve problems is the mandatory requirement of the school Chemistry curriculum. To help students study in high school the elective courses are introduced.
The article considers the role of stoichiometry in the school chemical education system. It is indicated for the need of a textbook for students to study the elective course “Solving Stoichiometric Problems in Chemistry, grades 10-11”. The textbook contains types of stoichiometric problems and methods for solving them. Attention is focused on the place of stoichiometry in Chemistry in the process of the formation of key competencies. For example, as a source of knowledge and use of acquired knowledge in everyday life; in the development of logical and critical thinking; improving knowledge of substance and natural phenomena from a chemical point of view. When solving stoichiometric problems, it is needed knowledge of Physics and Mathematics. The didactic, educational, and developing functions of stoichiometry in Chemistry were analyzed.
The textbook for the elective course includes several algorithms for solving stoichiometric problems. The student can familiarize him/herself with each of the solution options and choose the one that suits him/her the most. Stoichiometric problems in Chemistry are classified by complexity: simple, complex, and contextual. At the beginning of the textbook, algorithms for solving simple stoichiometric problems on one action are explained: using physical formulas, calculation of molar masses of substances. Further, algorithms for solving complex stoichiometric problems are given. The basis of such algorithms is the integrated skills of students to solve simple stoichiometric problems, independently combining already known algorithms and the ability to perform actions in typical situations.
The article substantiates the need to use the textbook for studying the course “Solving Stoichiometric Problems in Chemistry, grades 10-11”. This textbook can be used by students as a self-study book.
