Abstract

The article deals with the problem of managing upper schoolchildren’s independent work in a foreign language by means of a textbook. The author analyzes the understanding of the term «teaching aids», and examines only those tools which can be used for organizing upper pupils’ independent work in a foreign language and are intended specifi cally for them, that is, a textbook. It’s necessary to organize the work with a textbook in such a way that pupils would acquire knowledge consciously and independently; it should be performed by well-designed system of educational tasks. Independent work with texts for home reading is conducting by means of exercises that are given at the end of the text and are done by schoolchildren independently at home. The textbooks for the upper school have reference materials, which are specially selected and prepared according to the current curriculum and are correlated with pupils’ age characteristics and their experience in studying a foreign language, and which can be used by them during independent work. The author identifi es a project as a method that helps to optimize teaching process in school, to develop the skills of upper pupils’ independent work and the author’s examples of projects on environmental themes in the textbooks of German for upper school are given. The textbook, which is constructed on the didactic principles of teaching a foreign language in upper school, will promote the effi ciency of upper schoolchildren’s independent work in a foreign language. The work with such a textbook will help in forming the skills of pupils’ independent work and contribute to the development of their intellectual activities.
