Abstract

Actual problems of teaching spelling of the Belarusian language are considered in connection with the development of pupils’ speech culture. The authors formulate goals and objectives of interrelated teaching spelling of the Belarusian language and development of pupils’ speech culture in general secondary education in the context of the competency-based approach that provides formation and development of linguistic, speech, communicative, cultural and socio-cultural competencies of pupils. General methodological principles of teaching content selection, such as system-functional, communicative-rhetorical ones, minimization of linguistic and speech theoretical material, text centrism, teaching language as a phenomenon of culture, a cultural and language dialogue, are characterized. Representation of spelling material in a new textbook for 5th grade is analyzed: refreshment of the studied material in the primary school with the aim of maintaining continuity in teaching spelling; a system of exercises aimed at learning the educational material and providing a gradual complication of tasks (from propaedeutic exercises and illustrated exercises to consolidation and creative exercises). Particular attention is drawn to the use of the text in the textbook as didactic material, nature of assignments to texts that are aimed not only at developing teaching and language skills of pupils (phonetic, spelling, lexical, etc.), but also at the development of reading literacy. Thus, the authors emphasize that teaching spelling on a textual basis provides a systematic mastery of Belarusian spelling, which creates conditions for forming correctness and communicative expediency of pupils’ speech.
