Abstract

The current stage of the development of the Ukrainian society is characterized by significant changes in all its spheres, including the field of education, the significance of which is considerably increasing in the context of socio-cultural problems facing sovereign Ukraine. The modern paradigm of education and upbringing requires a critical reflection of the past which would help to improve the living conditions of a person in order to further his/her movement and development. A series of works devoted to the new reading of the heritage of individual pedagogical thinkers, the discovery of new names and the return to historical and pedagogical context of entire periods appeared at the turn of the XX — XXI centuries. To sustain the logic of historical and pedagogical research we turn to the figure of Sava Chavdarov: a teacher-practitioner, a methodologist, a cultural-educational as well as a public figure. The multidimensional nature of S. Chavdarov’s pedagogical heritage and the experience of his educational activity, the significance of the teacher’s ideas to the modern theory and practice of education and upbringing is the subject of scientific research that enriches the history of Ukrainian pedagogy. The creative achievements of teachers, their theoretical and practical developments in the field of pedagogy are returned to us through their ideas, interesting considerations concerning the construction of the educational process in school, the structural components of the learning process, the problems of teaching methods of various subjects and, finally, the improvement of modern teaching technologies. A well-known scholar, organizer of the educational process at secondary and higher educational institutions, a scientist and public figure, Sava Chavdarov (1892–1962), belongs to a galaxy of outstanding figures of the national pedagogical thought, whose scientific heritage, educational and social work deserve comprehensive reflection. S. Chavdarov — the honored scientist, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the RRFSR, professor, the author of the Ukrainian language textbooks for the 1, 2, 3, 4th grades, of the methods for pedagogical schools, higher educational establishments, monographs, manuals, articles. S. Chavdarov’s scientific achievements are known to number more than two hundred scientific works. An analysis of the scientist’s work shows how he thoroughly developed the problem of teaching methods. The theory and practice of teaching have their reflection in his methodological manuals, textbooks and articles, that at their times met the urgent needs of the school and are still of considerable scientific value.
