Abstract

The wide variety of textbooks and teaching manuals offered to modern foreign language teachers complicates the opportunity for their review, analysis and practical use by secondary school teachers, especially young specialists, graduates of higher educational institutions. The results of surveys made among graduate students showed that 43 % of students do not have sufficient theoretical knowledge (textbook functions, its content, structure, methods and forms of its use). During teaching practice they met with such difficulties as the adaptation to work with the books which they didn’t study before; methodological textbooks analysis; methodologically correct choosing the methods and forms of work with the textbook. Other 57 % have not enough theoretical knowledge in practice and met with similar problems. Also, the vast majority of students (81 %) found the need for a theoretical and practical information – namely, increasing the number of training hours in the course "Methods of foreign languages teaching" to be able to study more topics or in a separate special course concerning studying the textbook usage problems. In order to solve the problem of forming of future foreign language teachers readiness for textbooks using in their professional activities we are going to create the theoretical foundation and development of special course for future foreign language teachers "School foreign language textbook, its content and technology of usage". The purpose of the special course is to introduce the students the theoretical basics of textbook science and some features of textbooks creation; broad the knowledge about methods of analysis and evaluation of this type of educational literature; form the ability to do didactic and methodical analysis of the textbook and effectively organize work with the educational book in the classroom and at home.
