Abstract
The article describes the methodological requirements for the selection of the illustrative material in a school textbook on the history of the ancient world. It is notifi ed that the illustrative material is an important structural component of a school textbook of the history of the ancient world, which serves as a visual support for students, is closely related to the content of the educational material, and is the carrier of certain information as well as an important means of the educational impact on students. The article stated that in the process of the selection of the textbook illustrations, the authors and the publishers need to consider the methodological aspects of the functions of illustrations, their types and their requirements. In author’s opinion, illustrative material as a structural component of the textbook should perform the following functions: informational, developmental, educational and motivational ones. The article presents the types of illustrative material and their usage in the textbook. The author notes that the selection of illustrative material should be carried out simultaneously with the selection of a text component tutorial. In accordance with the author of the article the general requirements to the selection of illustrative material are the following: 1) scientific character; 2) typicality; 3) subjects variety; 4) availability; 5) focus on the development of the aesthetic taste of the students.
